LEADING BRANDS PERFORM AT THE GRAMMYS

21 February 2008

(Los Angeles) - JBL loudspeakers were used in the arena and monitoring rooms of the 50th Annual Grammy Awards telecast on Sunday, February 10 at the Staples Center.

JBL LSR Series studio monitors, Vertec line arrays and VRX portable line arrays played a critical role in making this year’s Grammy Awards telecast the most successful to date.

The GRAMMY Awards were broadcast live in HDTV and 5.1 surround sound on the CBS Television Network. The show was also supported on radio via Westwood One worldwide and XM Satellite Radio.

The annual GRAMMY Awards telecast, known as Music’s Biggest NightĀ is presented by The Recording Academy®, to honor outstanding achievements in the production and performance of recorded music.

The star-studded production for this 50th Annual GRAMMY Awards anniversary special featured a host of live entertainers and celebrity presenters. Amy Winehouse and Kanye West were the biggest winners of the evening, with Winehouse taking home five GRAMMY Awards. Awards presenters included 27-time GRAMMY winner and 50th GRAMMY Celebration Ambassador Quincy Jones, 25-time GRAMMY winner Stevie Wonder, multi-GRAMMY winners Tony Bennett, Prince and Ringo Starr, and two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks, among others.

Key members of The Recording Academy’s Producers and Engineers Wing used JBL LSR6300 Series studio monitors for critical monitoring during the Awards telecast, which aired live on CBS. Additionally, mix engineer Klaus Landsberg used JBL LSR4300 Series studio monitors to create the audience reaction mix. "Tremendous production value went into the 50th GRAMMY telecast,” said Michael Abbott, Audio Director for the GRAMMY Awards. “It was essential to accurately hear the subtleties of the show. As in the past, we chose a 5.1 JBL LSR6300 Series Studio Monitor system for its ability to deliver accuracy, even in problematic rooms, and once again, the system did the job perfectly."

To present all this talent to the live audience, rental system provider ATK/Audiotek (Valencia, CA) deployed a large multi-array JBL VERTEC system, with 70 full-size VT4889 line array elements temporarily suspended in the STAPLES Center. VT4880 subwoofer arrays boosted low-frequency reinforcement, and a dozen JBL VRX932LA loudspeakers (powered by Crown I-Tech amplifiers) served as VIP fill enclosures. "JBL VERTEC arrays give us highly predictable coverage, and they set up faster and are lighter weight than other options," observed Jeff Peterson, Event System Engineer for ATK. "That is critically important in this venue due to the massive truss structures and lighting and video equipment brought in to support the live show and telecast."
