White Light Makes Waves at Summer Beach Party

August 2015

Mersea Island in Colchester, Essex is one of the most tranquil spots in the county, with estuary views, boat yards and ideal fishing locations. It was also home to Anchorage Beach Club, a pop-up venue that hosted a four-day event last week and brought island life to a beach club setting.

Produced by Phil Marfleet and James Robinson, the event, which was the first of its kind, saw over 1000 guests attend during the four days. Having previously worked with White Light, Phil called upon the complete production solution specialist to provide the lighting support on such a unique occasion.

Anchorage Beach Club took place from 13 - 16 August, with the aim being to provide entertainment to all ages across four summer nights. Phil Marfleet, Event Producer, comments: “We saw a gap in the market for an event during the summer which would appeal to a large variety of people. Using the fantastic space of Mersea Island, we hosted an event which included a children’s party, a cinema, a cocktail party and a club night. We wanted to cater for absolutely everyone and at the same time create an unforgettable occasion.” The event featured appearances from renowned European DJs such as Team Bastian, Alex Cruz and Joshua Roberts. As this was the first appearance for the Anchorage Beach Club, it meant that Marfleet and business partner Robinson were extremely eager for it to be a success. Marfleet comments: “Once we had decided on the varied programme, we wanted to have an impressive production which would help get the most out of each event. Lighting obviously plays a large role in this and following our previous experience of working with White Light, we knew they were the only choice to supply this.”

Along with Lighting Designer Nev Milson, Marfleet was able to draw from White Light’s extensive range of lighting stock to ensure that they created the exact set-up required. The equipment used included Clay Paky Sharpys, Martin MAC 101 LED Washlights, SGM X5 White LED Strobes and Look Solutions Viper 2.6 Smoke Machines. Jedd Hamilton, White Light’s Hire Manager, comments: “Not only did the lighting equipment need to be adaptable for the numerous activities taking place but it also had to be usable during both the daytime and evening. Fortunately, our lighting range is now so extensive that we can work on any occasion and embrace a unique project such as this”. Marfleet comments: “What is fantastic about working with White Light is that you can list what you require in terms of logistics and feel and they always provide a solution for you - a service that not many can offer.”

Along with the party atmosphere within the beach setting, the event was very much tailored to all ages and wanted to be as encompassing as possible. Marfleet comments: “We didn’t want to restrict anyone who wanted to come and join in the fun so actively made it available to everyone. The age of those in attendance literally ranged for 2 to 80 and it was brilliant to see so many people come together. The fact that we also managed to raise some funds for The Lullaby Trust was an added bonus.” Hamilton adds: “Not many pop up parties cater for such a variety so this was certainly a different event for us. However, as with the various concert tours, corporate events and private hires we’ve already worked on this year, we were able to work with the client and ensure we created the best set-up for them.”

With the Anchorage Beach Club being such a success, it is expected to make an immediate return next summer, with the possibility of extending to a UK tour. Marfleet comments: “This was an amazing event and definitely one we want to pursue again. It was also another brilliant experience of working with White Light. They are a fantastic team whose superb equipment matches their high levels of service. We have other events we are already preparing for in the future and will be calling on White Light once more.” Hamilton adds: “This was such a unique event and it’s exciting for us as a company to be involved with the very first one. Hopefully it will be a regular fixture and, as with all projects we work on, we will use both our equipment and knowledge to get the most out of each occasion.”
